The Degree
Bradley’s Department of Computer Science and Information Systems offers an undergraduate curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. The purpose of the program is to prepare graduates to gain a breadth of knowledge in the major areas of computing, while required options and the electives afford students the opportunity to get depth in an area or areas of interest. Some of these areas include:

  • database concepts
  • artificial intelligence
  • software engineering
  • programming language concepts
  • operating systems
  • computer networks
  • cryptography and security
  • computer graphics
  • computer architecture

Curriculum
Students in Bradley’s Computer Science program work directly with faculty who regularly publish papers, conduct scholarly research, and receive funded grants to enhance their focus on scholarly teaching. Students in the program have the opportunity to work individually with a faculty member on independent research in some area of mutual computing interest.

Recently, some of Bradley’s Computer Science faculty members served as Principal Investigators for grant projects. The project topics included:

  • streaming multimedia technology
  • web-based teaching technologies
  • distributed computing
  • data mining

Opportunities at Bradley
Outside of the classroom, Bradley Computer Science majors have a wealth of cocurricular and cooperative learning experiences from which to choose, including:

  • Women in Computing
  • Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)

Numerous internship opportunities are available through the Smith Career Center, allowing students to receive real-world business experience as an undergraduate.

Beyond Bradley
Computer scientists are frequently given the title of Software Engineer, which involves work on all phases of the software development process for various industries including:

  • producing software associated with hardware devices
  • networking
  • telecommunications

Because of the expansion in the use of complex computing algorithms into areas such as data mining and visualization, computer scientists are now employed in all industries managing and guiding the production of software products. Bradley Computer Science graduates enjoy an excellent placement rate. Recent graduates hold positions at companies including:

  • Caterpillar Inc.
  • Discover Financial Services
  • Software Architects
  • Hewitt Associates LLC
  • Accenture
