The Degree in Nursing
Bradley’s Department of Nursing offers an undergraduate curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.). At Bradley, the study of nursing blends theory and practice to prepare graduates to successfully complete the NCLEX-RN examination to become a registered nurse. The program is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Nurses are increasingly at the forefront of innovative medical developments, and must cultivate new knowledge about what works in a situation and why. Bradley’s nursing program incorporates a study of liberal arts – which offers a rich and valuable background through foundation, elective, and supporting courses in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics.
Students begin their clinical experiences during the first semester of the sophomore year. The program includes:
- Level I trauma center experience/ critical care experience
- Acute care experiences at four different hospitals
- Perioperative experiences at both inpatient and outpatient facilities
- Skilled care experiences at selected nursing home sites
- Psychiatric care experiences in adult, pediatric, and chemical dependency
- Community health care experiences at various facilities including schools, shelters, outpatient clinics, home health care, VNA, and public health departments
- Maternal- child health care experience at a children’s hospital and selected sites
- Rural health care experience
Some of the specialized interests of Bradley’s Nursing faculty include:
- Maternal child nursing
- Men’s and women’s health
- Health care to minority and underserved populations
- Cardiovascular medicine
- Critical care
Opportunities at Bradley
During their senior year, students can choose to participate in the co-op program, which places students in medical-surgical acute care units, where they are mentored by graduate nurses. Students have the option to work for a salary while earning academic credit. One great feature of the program is that students can participate in clinical work without delaying their academic course work. Bradley is in an ideal location for medical employment, as Peoria is the downstate Medical Center of Illinois with three major medical centers.
Honor students are invited to become members of the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. The Epsilon Epsilon Chapter co-sponsors a Research Conference that is open to all students.
Beyond Bradley
The placement rate for BSN’s and MSN’s has been 100 percent within six months of graduation. Many graduates of the program have held or currently hold nationally significant positions in organizations including:
- The Veterans Administration
- The Armed Services
- U.S. Public Health Service
