Bradley Hilltopics: "Rainforest database benefits Smithsonian"

Tyler Tippett, Lewistown, IL, Computer Science

THE SMITHSONIAN ASKED FOR MY HELP

I had a unique experience at Bradley because I was able to work in fields related to my major with The Smithsonian Institute Branch in Panama.

My class was the first to get to do a field-based senior design project. It was a year-long course that was part of a new program. It was a project for a small group.

The Smithsonian Institute branch in Panama needed a database to store research information. Basically, they count and classify each tree in the Rain Forest. They didn't have a place to store the information. They needed a database to store the information and be able to compare it to previous data.

Our class project was to design and build a database that could handle this information, not only from the researchers in Panama, but also all over the world so that the information could be shared.

Our group, along with our professor, was invited to attend a conference at the Smithsonian in Panama where we were able to learn more about the Rain Forest Project, and to present our own project to others.

BRADLEY WAS THE LARGEST SCHOOL I LOOKED AT

Bradley was one of the largest schools I looked at. (I looked at U of I for like a minute, but I knew it was too big.)

I knew everyone in my high school, so the larger size of Bradley increased my chance of meeting new people. I even have a friend from Guam. I never thought I would meet someone from Guam.

I've had a unique experience at Bradley because I was able to work in fields related to my major and get to meet so many people.
