"Yes, yes it probably was. Not only do I do standup comedy, but it's turned into something more. I started out coordinating comedy shows on campus for Bradley's Activities Council. From there, I had the opportunity to open as a comedian for some performers that have come to campus. I now find my comic interests are tying into my independent research project. I spent a whole semester doing research with a professor, studying the stages in which children understand comedy in cartoons, and things like the irony of comedy."
I had the opportunity to take Psychology 400, which was a new honors course. I get to spend the whole semester doing independent research with a professor, and possibly getting published. This will give me great experience, and will definitely help me get into graduate school and a psychology PhD program of my choice. I am double majoring in psychology and electronic media. I hope to go on to graduate school in sports psychology and help athletes improve sports performance by overcoming mental obstacles. I would like to then go on and be a television sports analyst. My goal is to set a niche for myself before going into television.
Midstate Magazine is a student-produced, weekly television program at Bradley. Midstate gives students the opportunity to gain television production and talent experience in a professional setting. The cool thing about Bradley is that you can get involved in anything that you want without too many obstacles. There are people to support you and help you get involved in the things that you want to do. My first semester I was able to be a news anchor for Midstate, as well as sports anchor, host, and even produce my own segment in following semesters. I have also had the opportunity to assist with the production of the show which counted as a class for me! It isn't even schoolwork; it's fun….and great experience for the real world from the moment I stepped on campus.
Peoria has a great market for Electronic Media majors with all three major network affiliates. I was able to meet with Dave Snell who has worked in radio and television in Peoria for many years including broadcasting Bradley Braves men's basketball. I attended an alumni breakfast as part of my affiliation with the Smith Career Center (Internship) and there I met Lori Fan, from the Bradley alumni office. She offered to introduce me to Dave Snell who works in the Alumni office with her. Dave made a call and all of a sudden I was offered an internship with the local CBS affiliate. All it took was one initial contact on campus. It's really easy and fun to network on campus and those people will help you make connections outside of Bradley. |
